Talan Skeels-Piggins
I started sailing when I was nine years old. My parents put me in a little Optimist and I was told to 'get on with it'. Despite not coming from a sailing family, I was able to feel where the wind was coming from and what I needed to do in order to move, turn and have fun. From those first beginnings I was able to learn to sail almost any craft and raced a lots as well. After being paralysed in 2003 I found a way to continue sailing, racing a Dart18, then a 2.4mR and finally back to a 27ft yacht.
My life would not be as amazing if it wasn't for the poeple in it. The most important of those is my partner Juli. She is supportive of everything I do, everything I want to do and am yet to do. Juli will be able to join in the challenge at the mid point of the circumnavigation (Kirkwall) in July.
I believe in helping others, compassion and fairness. Sport can provide opportunities to enhance self-belief, develop confidence, enable the individual and inspire generations. While I am very competitive, I also want to support fellow individuals to excell in being the best version of ourselves. I ask myself the same question at the end of every day "What have I done today to make myself a better person?"..
Do you have questions or comments about my challenge? Send me a message, and I will get back to you soon.
